Ruth Ekka of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, has been named this year’s winner of Nebraska Wesleyan University’s full-tuition Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholarship.

Nebraska Wesleyan University awards one competitive full-tuition PTK-SMÂÛ̳ Scholarship, which provides the cost of tuition up to three years. PTK is an honor society of two-year colleges, including community colleges whose students excel academically.

Ekka is transferring to SMÂÛ̳ from Southeast Community College where she graduated in May with high distinction with an associate of applied science degree in human services. While at SCC, she also earned a certificate in drug and alcohol counseling.

An international student from India, Ekka volunteered in her home country with International Justice Mission, a global organization focused on human rights. Through this experience, she discovered an interest in mental health counseling.

At Nebraska Wesleyan, Ekka plans to study social work and psychology and become active in the university’s International Justice Mission chapter as well as SMÂÛ̳ Crusade for Christ, International Relations Organization, X-Clusive step and hip-hop organization and student government.
